Forest regeneration is a key evolutionary stage during which genetically diverse cohorts of seedlings experience strong mortality and selection driven by microenvironmental conditions and forest management. This PhD project aims to improve our understanding of how demographic and evolutionary processes, including genetic drift, natural selection, and parental contributions, shape genetic diversity and adaptive potential at early life stages in oak and pine. By combining genetic analyses of naturally regenerating forests under contrasted forest management and regeneration common garden experiments, the project will identify loci under microenvironmental selection and quantify the drivers of genetic diversity across successive seedling cohorts. A particular focus will be placed on the role of genetic mixtures (provenances within species) and assisted gene flow in enhancing forest resilience, productivity, and long-term adaptation. Results will be compared with range-wide patterns of genetic variation to assess their contribution to maintaining adaptive potential under climate change. The project will contribute to next-generation strategies for forest restoration and management, providing guidelines for the use of genetic mixtures and long-term experimental resources.
